[Review] Insanity by Cameron Jace

Writing (world building, characters, style, etc.):

What even is the plot of this book? I really, really wanted to like this book. I had really been looking forward to reading it since it sounded like my kind of book. Unfortunately, it didn’t meet expectations. I don’t know what the plot is. A lot of things happened, but at the same time nothing did. I wonder if this is one of those books I’m just too dumb to understand.

I couldn’t immerse myself in the world. First of all, I wasn’t sure when this was taking place. Yes, it’s in the modern world, but when?  This matters to me. Also, the writing felt a bit mediocre at times. It’s not bad, I just expect a little more from authors. But I think the biggest problem was that I wasn’t sure if I was looking at the world through the eyes of an insane person and I as a reader was supposed to recognize the symptoms, or if I was supposed to accept the world presented to me as reality. I guess this guessing game is part of the fun, but I just didn’t have any.

The characters were certainly interesting. They are probably my favorite adaptations so far. So much fun!

Did I learn anything? Did it make me think?

I feel like maybe I would like this book more if I knew about mental illnesses. Though mental health is not this book’s point, I think I would understand it better if I could recognize some of the symptoms.

This book reminded me of the movie Sucker Punch. Where the protagonist goes between the real world and the fantasy world she created to escape her situation and to figure out a way to escape the asylum. Similarly, it’s also not clear whether the protagonist is actually crazy or not.

I liked Sucker Punch better, there was plot.

Overall feelings:

“We all go a little mad sometimes”

.

.

.

but this book didn’t do it justice. I think the best type of crazy, is crazy with a plan.

  1. Oh boy. I was hoping to read this. It’s a retelling of Alice in Wonderland right? I’m obsessed with anything Wonderland. Too bad you didn’t like it.

  2. Ooh I just bought a copy of this novel the other day. It’s been sitting on my shelf for a month or so. Your review was good. I shall not hold any expectations when I get into the novel.

It is disappointing how little plot there was in the novel. And how many flaws the overall novel had. Just the little indie writer flaws the book would have.

Still excited to read the novel so we can discuss about it. 😀
