“The fate of the world is in the hands of detective of the supernatural R. F. Jackaby and his intrepid assistant, Abigail Rook. An evil king is turning ancient tensions into modern strife, using a blend of magic and technology to push Earth and the Otherworld into a mortal competition. Jackaby and Abigail are caught in the middle as they continue to solve the daily mysteries of New Fiddleham, New England — like who’s created the rend between the worlds, how to close it, and why zombies are appearing around. At the same time, the romance between Abigail and the shape-shifting police detective Charlie Cane deepens, and Jackaby’s resistance to his feelings for 926 Augur Lane’s ghostly lady, Jenny, begins to give way. Before the four can think about their own futures, they will have to defeat an evil that wants to destroy the future altogether.” – Goodreads
The Jackaby books quickly became one of my favorite series. I love it when mythical creatures and the such mix in with our world. I love it even more in Victorian/Victorian-esque settings. The writing was also quite good and very easy to get through. I’m a little sad that the series has ended, but it was an excellent journey.
The last few pages were a rollercoaster of emotions, I was ready to flip tables, punch through monitors, and throw things out the window. However, deep down, I knew I was going to get the ending I wanted since it was a tiny bit predictable. For some reason however, even though I got the ending I wanted, I wasn’t completely satisfied. I didn’t like that a sacrifice had to be made in the end. Yes, I knew it was coming, I wanted it to happen because the alternative would have been worse but I just wish it had been a little different. Maybe, I’m just thinking too much about a character that was hardly in the story and perhaps this was their happy ending.
Another thing that made the ending feel a little less satisfying was that I felt like some of the characters, though minor but still prevalent, were sort of just forgotten in the end. Did they die? Are they alive? Are they in grave condition? I need to know these facts!
That is the end of my review.
Score:5/5 I recommend this series!
